My passion for warm glass stayed with me as I found that many of the qualities which attracted me to print-making, such as layering, can be expressed through glass. My glass pieces are laminated with inclusions between two sheets of glass. The inclusions could be copper wire weavings, sand, bone, rusty iron and colour enamels. My glass pieces are simple in the mark making as I feel that less is more: subtlety and understatement often being more eloquent than great detail.
The oval shaped glass vessels represent the boat construction called "tonkang". There are eyes painted an the bow of the boat to help see the way over the water. These vessels are usually in green and red stripes over a black background. Where I grew up, my grandfather used this type of boat to transport goods from the ship to the godowns (storehouses built by the British) along the Singapore River and Kallang River. These types of boats are now used as water taxis on the Singapore River and on scenic tours.
